Why you should invest in your branding
Want to see something embarrassing? The evolution of my brand. This first photo is from 2002 and on an invoice for my first client. I had to take a photo from a printed version since the original is on a floppy disk (YIKES). I don’t think it ever made it on the web.
From 2003-2010, I basically had the same, simple text logo appearing on my website that you see below. This made it easy, but never really had my style.
In 2011, I redesigned my own site using WordPress and the Thesis theme. I finally created a logo design that felt like it matched who I was and who I wanted to be as a business owner. I was on the right track here.
I had various versions of this “WebCami” and finally in 2016, I hired my dear friend (and graphic designer) Lindsay Fournier, to add her expertise and transform my branding attempts. She created a new logo, business cards, greeting cards, mailing labels, and a style guide. I finally felt like I was representing my true self!
Why did I show you this evolution?
I look back and wish I had invested in professional branding from the get-go. Too many web designers skip this step because of the “hey, I’m a designer, too” mentality. I know – I had it. But, I’m not a graphic designer, I’m a web designer. I’m certainly not skilled in creating a brand for myself or for others. Some of you might offer both services and I so admire your talent. But for me, I needed help.
The best investment you can make is in your own business. Put branding on the top of your list. (When it came time to create a brand for WebCami Cafe, I went straight to Lindsay)
